Week Twenty Four - Signs of Spring
This week we have started learning about signs of spring! We have done lots of busy jobs based on daffodils and blossom and the different flowers that start to appear during spring time. We were able to go to a walk to the nature area on Thursday and see the differences and similarities from when we went in winter. We could see lots of buds on the trees and hear lots of birds singing sweetly. We were able to hang up our bird feeders, that we made a few weeks ago, and a robin was particularly interested straight away. On Friday it was sports relief and we dressed up in our sports clothes, if we wanted, and each class did some outdoor P.E. games. The other class did some imaginative work in a group; thinking about creating a racing car and where that racing car would take us. We are really trying to encourage imaginative thinking especially for when the children move up through the school and have to start making up their own stories. Next week we will begin our new topic of the farm ahead of our school trip. If you haven't had the email about our trip please do let us know so we can get you a paper copy. Week Twenty Three - More Dinosaurs!
This week we have continued learning about dinosaurs. On Monday we began with the diplodocus. In the afternoon this week the Red Admirals were with singing Sally and the Holly Blues had their turn at making their own musical instruments. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday we learned about the Stegosaurus whilst the other group were at P.E. We wrote some facts; trying to use our best handwriting. On Thursday it was World Book Day so we were lucky that some of our grown ups came to join us and we had a whole day of activities based on the story "Journey" by Aaron Becker. It is actually a trilogy so there are two more books which follow on (Quest and Return) which maybe you could find at the library. On Friday we started learning about volcanoes and how this could be the reason dinosaurs became extinct. We all had a go at a volcano dance; thinking about how to move to show the volcano erupting. Then we made some volcanoes with tissue paper and wrote down some facts we had learnt. In maths this week we've been looking at number 10 and beginning to do some take-away sums; telling stories about dinosaurs in a swamp then some run away and how many do we have left? Everyone should have received their letter about which weeks your child is swimming. If you are unsure please let us know asap as group one will be starting their lessons on Monday afternoon. Make sure all clothes, towel and hat are named. You should have also received a letter about our upcoming farm trip which will be great fun! Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Week Twenty Two - Dinosaurs!
This week we have been learning all about dinosaurs. We started with what lots of children said was their favourite dinosaur - the T-Rex! On Monday during Music the Holly Blues were with singing Sally and the Red Admirals made their very own musical instruments - we found out when we used the thin elastic bands or smaller items they made a higher noise and when we used the thicker bands or bigger items they made a lower noise. On Tuesday and Wednesday in handwriting we carried on doing our long ladder letters of 'u', 'j' and 'y' and in P.E. we started doing some group games. On Thursday we all had a go and making a silhouette dinosaur with a beautiful oil pastel background and a T-Rex head with a jointed jaw. On Friday we learnt lots of T-Rex facts and made our own fact files, painted a T-Rex and made a T-Rex mobile - they looked so cute! Next week we will carry on learning about dinosaurs. If you have any kitchen rolls, small plastic bottles or plastic boxes - such as grapes, tomatoes come in please bring them in on Monday to help us with our junk modelling. Thank you to everyone who attended Parents evenings this week. If you haven't arranged a time with a teacher yet please do get in touch as soon as possible as this is when you receive your child's report. We had the last of our writing Stay and Play sessions this week. Thank you to everyone who has been able to attend - I know the children loved having you with them! Week Twenty One - Arctic Lands
This week we've been learning about the Arctic and the people and animals that live there. We looked at the differences and similarities between things that we have and things that might need to be different if you live somewhere really cold; different clothes, different types of transport etc. In fine motor we did lots of igloo based activities as we learnt that sometimes when Inuits are out hunting they have to build these temporary buildings to keep them warm. On Thursday we all had a go at an ice experiment! We each had a piece of ice and we had some salt, sugar and sand to see if any of these would make the ice melt faster. Then on Friday we did another carousel meaning we all did 3 busy jobs in the morning again! We learnt about walruses and all had a go at painting one, writing some facts about them and making an arctic picture. We also raised £55 for Glenfield Hospital Heart Unit by wearing our red outfits for Valentine's Day! Thank you! And some more parents were able to come for our stay and play and learn about how we teach writing at school, thank you too! There should be one more group left to come in on the 28th February so if you've not managed to attend a session yet please do come along. Don't forget swimming will be starting 2 weeks after half term so if you've not returned your letter please do let us know about your child's swimming experience so we can make sure they are in a suitable group! Week Twenty - Penguins!
This week we have been learning all about Antarctica and especially about the Penguins who live there. We've done some really careful drawings and paintings of different types of Penguins and learnt so many facts which we have been writing down to share with you - our writing is improving so much! We are still working on improving our fine motor and letter formation every week. In maths we have continued looking at number 8 and the number bonds that add up to make 8. In phonics we are working hard to try and remember our top tips for sentence writing. We had another parent session looking at how to support this at home on Friday. Next week if you are a Holly Blue parent that hasn't attended please come along next Friday morning and if a Red Admiral parent then it will be the Friday after half term. Week Nineteen - Winter
This week we have returned to learning about the season of Winter. We've done lots of snowy type activities involving all sorts of different materials. We had a special treat of a trip to the nature area where we looked for signs of winter. It looked very different to when we went in Autumn; all the trees were bare and all the leaves squelching underfoot. In P.E. we have carried on using the apparatus and are learning to jump safely from the larger boxes. We've been working hard on our 'have a go' writing; trying to really stretch longer words and listen to the sounds we can hear - not worrying about whether they are spelled correctly or not. In maths we've been learning about the number 8 and trying to add 2 single digit numbers together and find the answer. Thank you to the first group of parents who came to our writing stay and play. Week Eighteen - Assembly Week
This week we have spent a lot of time preparing for our Assembly. The children worked so hard to learn their lines, act out the story, know when to stand up and sit down and to come on and off the stage, and also to learn to sing our song. We have had a special treat of learning some Judo in our classes this week. On Thursday we performed to the Years 3-6 and then on Friday to our lovely parents and the Year 1 and 2s. I think we can all agree they did a marvelous job - it is very nerve-wracking performing in front of such a lot of people and especially our families and we were able to use such loud voices! Week Seventeen - Chinese New Year
This week we have begun learning about how Chinese New Year is celebrated in preparation for our Assembly next Friday. We have made lanterns to hang up and decorate our classroom; dragon masks; drums to play; painted the animals to go up in the hall and started learning our lines for our Assembly. In maths this week we continued learning about number 7 and also being able to give the answer to one more or fewer than any number up to 10 - looking at number placement on a number line. In phonics we have continued to work hard on our stretching and chopping to write words and sometimes even short sentences. We had our last session of apparatus in P.E. In handwriting we focussed on forming 'b' and 'p'. The Red Admirals played a good game in music which was a bit like pass the parcel whilst the Holly Blues had Singing Sally. Please do come and join us next Friday after you have dropped off your child; head over to the office and take your seat ready for our Assembly to start at 9:15. If you haven't sent in a coloured t-shirt yet for your child to wear please send this asap and make sure it is named. If your child has chosen to have a line in the play please help them to practise it at home; nice and loudly! Week Sixteen - Frozen
The Butterflies have returned to school after the break really well and got stuck into activities straight away. With missing Monday, we went straight into P.E. or handwriting on Tues and Wed and therefore just completed a mini-topic, with a winter theme, of Frozen. We did snowflake and snowman activities as well as talking a bit about our favourite characters. We also tried to draw them and their beautiful palaces. We have really enjoyed using cornflour to try and make snowmen and then watching them melt when we put them down! Please do make sure that you have returned your child's P.E. kit to school and that all clothes that are worn whilst here are clearly labelled, as a few children have been getting confused about what belongs to them. You should have received a letter with all our important dates for the next couple of months including our Class Assembly on the 24th January at 9:15. Week Fifteen - Christmas Party Time!
What a fun week! We have still been doing lots of busy jobs and a few Maths and phonics sessions but otherwise we've mainly had a nice week celebrating together. Hopefully you enjoyed all their Christmas creations that they brought home to share with you on Tuesday. The classroom now looks very bare ready for the new start after the holidays. On Wednesday we had a very busy day; starting with Reverend Bailey coming to talk to us at assembly; then our Christmas dinner where all the teachers came and sat with us; then in the afternoon we had our party! We danced; played musical statues, bumps and chairs; we played pass the parcel; and then finally we all sat down in groups to share our Christmas party food. It was a lovely day! We really hope you all have a fun and restful break whatever you are doing and that if you celebrate Christmas you enjoy that day too. Week Fourteen - Christmas and Church Trip
What a fun week! We have been doing a lot more about how many people celebrate Christmas; with trees, tinsel, cards and presents during this week! During the week we also had our Christmas sing-along on Tuesday where lots of our grown-ups came to hear what we had been learning. Some of us even showed off our musical instrument playing too. Then on Thursday we got to see the Year Two's nativity play "A Christmas Toy Story" which was lots of fun. Finally on Friday we had our class trip to the church where we met Reverend Bailey and he read us a story. Then we got to hang our decorations on the tree; look at some books; play with some advent calendars and a stable scene; and a quite treat of a biscuit while we had a look at the different important things you could find in the room. The children all walked really well especially as it was so cold and windy! In phonics this week we have just been recapping all we've learnt and in Maths we've been looking at shape and their properties starting with circles, ovals and triangles. Next week will be another busy fun-packed week, in particular Wednesday with our Christmas jumpers, Christmas Dinner and our class party! :) Don't forget to sign up if you would like to bring something for the Butterflies to share (the list is on the middle set of doors). Week Thirteen - Traditional Christmas
This week we began learning about what Christians celebrate at Christmas; and the story of the first Christmas. We have done lots of activities to help us remember the different characters and what happens. Next week on Friday we will be visiting the local church where one of our school governors is the vicar and he will show us some different things they have to help the children celebrate Christmas. We have also been making Christmas decorations to hang on their tree. In phonics we finished off our phase two sounds with 'x', 'y' and 'z' and we have been concentrating more on our segmenting of words and beginning to write more short sentences too remembering our capital letter at the beginning, finger space between words and full stop at the end. At this age we encourage them to 'have a go' at any longer word they are not sure of and just use the sounds that they hear and know and don't worry about whether they are actually correct. On Tuesday/Wednesday we weren't able to do P.E. in the hall because of the older children's nativity practise so we had our first visit to the ICT suite where we have been making you a special surprise. On Friday we did dance in our classes and pretended to be Autumn leaves twisting and turning in the wind. Week Twelve - Cinderella
This week we have been learning about fairy tales and in particular Cinderella - beginning to get us in the party mood for our winter time of celebrations. Our drawings/paintings of people are really getting better and better now! We are continuing to work on our handwriting, scissor skills and dexterity in fine motor. In phonics we have learnt 'j', 'v' and 'w' and in maths moved onto number 6. Again we looked at how 6 can be made up in different ways with 1 and 5 or 2 and 4 etc. In our circle time on Friday we made invitations for our friends to join us and dance together at our very own "ball". We all wrote our friends names and drew a picture of them on the front and then exchanged them. In the afternoon we watched a short clip of Cinderella dancing at the ball and then all had a go - unfortunately I realised I did not download those photos from the afternoon before I came home so I will add them in on Monday. Week Eleven - Goldilocks and the Three Bears
This week we looked at our last Traditional Tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children learnt the story so well and even can perform both a song and a rap about it. We carried on looking at number 5 in maths and in phonics learnt about some "greedy graphemes" - 'ck;, 'll', 'ss', and 'ff' and how in these there are two of the same sounds together just making one sound. We have carried on practising our brilliant person drawing with a painting of Goldilocks and really tried to extend our writing by writing a whole sentence "I am sorry!" and a few different captions (saying what you see) in phonics too. We played a fun bear/honey game in circle time too - we had to do super duper listening! Have a wonderful weekend. Goodbye and toodle-loo for now!
Week Ten - The Gingerbread man
On Monday we went to a special Remembrance Assembly and laid down the wreaths we had made on Friday during R Time. We all sat beautiful still and silent as we thought about the brave people who had fought for our country. The rest of the week was spent learning about the gingerbread man - we got very good at chanting "Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man!" We have done so many different busy jobs working on our fine motor and have even been trying to do more independent segmenting this week and really challenging ourselves. In maths we have been looking at number 5. We worked on finding fewer and also the different ways we can split 5 up. In phonics we continued with 'f', 'b', h' and 'l' and also practised lots of segmenting and caption reading - we have learnt that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. In music the Holly Blues listened to some musical instruments and thought about whether they made a high or a low sound; while the Red Admirals were with Singing Sally. We also had a go at making our own (ginger)bread sandwiches with jam or honey and on Friday we decorated gingerbread men with lots of coloured icing! Such fun! Have a wonderful weekend. Week Nine - Little Red Riding Hood

Our traditional tales topic has continued this week with Little Red Riding Hood. We have had such a busy week doing so many activities! In phonics we've moved onto 'e', 'u' and 'r' and we've continued with our blending; trying really hard to extend the sounds into each other so we can hear the word. In maths we've carried on working on number four and focusing on how we can represent it in different ways. We've also worked on finding out one less; singing maths songs to make it fun. In P.E. this week we started using the apparatus - we were so brave! On Wednesday our grown ups came to share our learning journeys with us and we got to take them home to show the rest of our families. If you haven't brought it back yet please get it to us asap so we can carry on adding november's stickers. On Friday we did some more drama - we are getting so confident. We learnt how to draw a person thinking about everything we need and where the different things should go - our arms come out of our shoulders not our tummies! Then in the afternoon we worked with a partner to make a poppy for our wreath to take to our special assembly on Monday - do feel free to bring any pennies for the children to take an add to the whole school collection. Week Eight - The Three Billy Goats Gruff
We have had another week learning about traditional tales - this time the Three Billy Goat's Gruff! The children are getting so good at acting out the stories now! We're really working on our expression which helps with our reading targets too. In phonics we moved on to o, c and k and really focused on our blending. In maths we've learned about number 4 and about how you can split it several ways but it still is 4, for example 3 and 1, 2 and 2 or 4 and 0. We are working on our fine motor every week now, when the other group does P.E., and trying to strengthen our hand muscles ready for our writing. We have also started learning how to form the letters we have studied in phonics correctly. On friday we had Diwali celebration day; we did lots of fun activities to learn about what some of our friends believe and got to go to our first assembly - we sat beautifully! In the afternoon we all did some dancing and then our parents came to celebrate with us and we had lots of party food! Week Seven - The Enormous Turnip!
This week in the Butterfly classroom we have continued our topic of Traditional tales and looked at the story of the enormous turnip! We have spent a lot of the week having great fun acting out the story - even the teachers had a go! We've tried to make sure we retell the story, using our own words, in the right order - just like we have been doing with our school reading books. The children loved making masks too so they could carry on the role play by themselves.
In maths this week we have been looking at number three and also the concept of more/fewer or the same. In phonics we've continued going through our sounds this week learning about 'm', 'd', and 'g'. We have started trying to blend sounds together to read words. Please make sure you are still practising the sounds we've been learning as this will really help your child when they come to try and read blending sheets and books.
Please not the school photographs on Monday have been rearranged due to a number of children being away for Diwali/New Year celebrations. If your child is not going to be attending please give the school office a ring or send them an email to let them know so they'll be able to record it as a religious absence. Also don't forget on friday it is our Diwali celebration day - your child can come in party or traditional clothes and in the afternoon parents can join us from 2:30. If you would like to send in any food please ensure it is vegetarian and nut free (must not even say 'may contain nuts' as we have a severe allergy in the class). If you are bringing in something homemade please also alert us if it contains egg, sesame or goats milk.
Week Six - Harvest

Another fun-packed week in the Butterfly classroom. We have learned all about different fruits and vegetables (and had our minds blown that tomatoes and peppers are really fruits!) and how some things are grown and then turned into something else. We looked at the story of the Little Red Hen and found out about how wheat is ground into flour and then made into bread and even had a go at making some rolls ourselves! They were delicious! The next day we even made our own orange juice to - it was hard work squeezing out the liquid! We also looked a little bit at what kinds of food are healthy for us and what kinds of food should just be a treat. We were very happy on Tuesday to have lots of our parents join us to learn about how we practise our gross and fine motor skills at school. Thank you to so many of you that were able to make it - the children really loved having you here!
In phonics we learned 'p', 'i' and 'n' and in maths we moved onto Number 2. We have been watching some numberblocks episodes as a starter and the Butterflies love them! Then on Friday in R Time we worked on listening to our partner, sharing and taking turns and being able to negotiate who would have a go at each activity first. And now it is time for a well earned break! Don't forget we have rescheduled the Autumn Work for Tuesday 22nd (weather permitting) so make sure your Butterfly has a warm, waterproof coat and hat and gloves that day as well as ensuring their wellies are back in school. This week in the Butterfly class we've been learning about Autumn and all it brings! And it's been a suitably cold and wet week to match. Though this did unfortunately been we had to postpone our Autumn walk to the Farmer's Field till after half term (date to be confirmed next week). Thankfully the rain did stop later in the week and we were able to go on a little walk around school where we found lots of brightly coloured leaves and even some conkers. In phonics this week we've begun to learn some sounds - this week we covered 's', 'a' and 't' and thought about where we can hear those sounds in different words. In maths we've started by looking at zero and number one. We have been thinking about how something can be 1 group of something and therefore still be one even if it contains lots: for example a packet of crisps is one packet but inside are lots of crisps or you might have 1 set of keys with lots of key on the keyring. We've had lots of fun mixing colours to make Autumn leaf pictures. This week all the children should have brought home their first reading book - this is a lilac level book where there are no words and only pictures. Your child should make up the story using as much detail as possible based on what they can see. Try to encourage them to think about what the characters might be saying too. If you can read with your child 3/4 times a week this will really help improve both their confidence and skills! Have a wonderful weekend. Goodbye and toodle-loo!
Week Four - Our Families!

This week we have been talking about our families. Thank you to everyone that has already brought in their family photo. The children have really enjoyed sharing about these in small groups. We haven't quite got through all of the class yet so if you still have it to bring in then please do, as we'd like everyone to have the chance to do this activity. We have also started looking at the Oxford Reading Tree Books about the Robinson Family and have been learning all about them too. We have began "reading" some lilac books together where they are pictures but no words and the children have to make up the story based on what they see. Next week we will start taking groups to have a go themselves, and the children will begin to bring these home to share with you too. We've also been learning about pattern and the Butterflies have had a go at making a 2 or sometimes even 3 part colour pattern. In phonics we've been continuing to practise rhyme and also started some oral blending with short CVC (3 sound) words. You could play at home too - "can you get me your b-a-g?" Next week we move onto the new topic of Autumn. We will be going for our autumn walk on Tuesday. Week Three - Ourselves
This week we have been learning about ourselves and our bodies. We have spent lots of time drawing, painting and creating different versions of ourselves trying to make sure we add in all the details. We began our phonics sessions this week with a small amount of phase one; looking at rhyming, rhythm, instrumental sounds and environmental sounds! This week we also had our first go at P.E. We didn't get fully changed but we all took off our shoes and socks and did really well. Next week we will be putting on our full P.E. kit so please make sure your child has their named shorts and t-shirt in a bag on their peg. On Friday we also spent a lot of time looking at different shapes; making shape pictures by sticking or drawing round them; with the magnetic shapes; and with the elastic bands too. We also started doing some dance lessons where we all pretended to be stars. Thankfully the weather has been really nice this week so we have been able to do free flow every afternoon where the children can choose if they want to learn inside or outside. Weeks One and Two - Settling In!

We have had a busy few weeks in the Butterfly classes settling into our new routines and surroundings. We have been having a go at so many different activities from painting to cutting, sticking to constructing, role play to tricycle riding. We have started doing whole class circle time and trying to get to know our new friends too. Each day during the first two weeks we looked at a nursery rhyme and did lots of different activities linked to this rhyme. Each day we begin with the register followed by an input on the days topic. After this we complete some "busy jobs" (the name we give to the special activities that the teachers want us to have a go at) and other activities. Next we have some fruit and time to play outside. From week three we will then have a short phonics session before going over to the dinner hall for lunch. In the afternoon we have another register session and then complete some more busy jobs; both inside and outside whilst the weather is still so nice before coming in for a story and some milk. Then finally it's time to go home! Each week this page will be updated with photos and information about what we have been getting up to in our busy Butterfly classroom!
